The origin of the Ichimatsu pattern dates back to the mid-Edo period.

The pattern was named after the kabuki actor Sanogawa Ichimatsu, who popularized it by wearing it as part of his stage costume. Inspired by him, people of the time began incorporating the design into their kimonos, and it soon became widely beloved, even among commoners.
