Pirate flags used many more symbols than the skull & bones. The flags were designed to frighten and intimidate a pirate's intended victims. Pierced hearts for the willingness to kill, horns for the devil, the Kraken to show mastery of the sea, nakedness for the lack of shame and the hourglass to show that your time was up are just some of the symbols that were used.
